MSc programme Urban Environmental Management The MSc programme Urban Environmental Management runs annually beginning from September. It comprises 120 European credit points (EC) and runs for two academic years. The first year consists entirely of course work (40 weeks); the second year consists of the academic internship (16 weeks) and thesis programme (24 weeks) as the core components of the Master’s degree programme. Each of these elements is described in more detail below.
Course work The course work consists of several compulsory core subjects (CS), restricted optional subjects (RO) and optional subjects from any relevant MSc programme offered by Wageningen University or by another academic institution (subject to approval). This means that you can adjust your personal programme to your own wishes, and either choose a further specialisation or a broadening of your programme. Programmes can be tailor made (depending on your background and research interest) in consultation with study adviser and thesis supervisor.
Within the MSc Urban Environmental Management programme, students can major in one of seven disciplines. Each major has its own course work curriculum. The curriculum can also differ between students depending on their preparatory training. To find out which subjects you have to include in your programme, it is advisable to contact the study adviser or consult the Wageningen University Study Handbook.
The common part The common part of the MSc Urban Environmental Management programme is listed below. These courses are compulsory or restricted optional for all students of the MSc Urban Environmental Management programme independent of their major.

Internship The compulsory academic internship Urban Environmental Management consists of 24 credits of practical work outside of Wageningen University. The purpose of the internship is to provide students with a unique learning opportunity to apply learned skills and concepts to a professional setting. The experience gained from the internship also serves to help students focusing on their area of interest as well as building confidence and maturity in their field.
Whilst securing an internship is primarily a responsibility of the student, the partcipating Chair Groups will provide substantial assistance in finding a suitable position, ensuring that the work experience is relevant to the student's study programme. The internship may either be undertaken in the Netherlands or abroad. To receive credits for an internship, students must receive a satisfactory evaluation from their internship supervisor at the participating Chair Group.
Students with (supervised) relevant work experience on an academic level may exchange the internship for a minor thesis (24 credits) in another field than the major.
Thesis The thesis component is the most important part of the MSc Urban Environmental Management programme. It consists of 36 credits with research usually conducted under the supervision of a staff member with the relevant Chair Group. If the Chair Group agrees, research may also take place in another academic institution or research institute. Students decide on the topic of their research in consultation with their thesis supervisor. The research concludes with a written thesis which is assessed and graded by the supervisor, together with another independent staff member. The students will present their results in a seminar ("colloquium").
